At CarbonX, we’re transforming the battery industry with cutting-edge materials that outperform traditional graphite in batteries. Our efficient production process minimizes energy use and emissions, fosters local manufacturing, and reduces reliance on conventional graphite supply chains.
What You'll Do
As a Quality Control Engineer, you will be responsible for validating our raw materials and developing feedstock, overseeing quality control during production, and ensuring that our carbon-based materials meet the highest standards. Your work will be primarily laboratory-based, complemented by critical decision-making at production sites.
Laboratory Work & Quality Control (75%)
- Chemical Validation & Quality Control: Validate chemicals using techniques like UV-Vis spectroscopy, rheology measurements, and TGA. Develop and implement QC methodologies for chemical validation, emulsion stability (Karl Fischer Titration, Rheology), and in-line process monitoring. Expand QC capabilities with new lab techniques.
- Production & Process Validation: Validate CarbonX structures using the in-house reactor and operate two tubular furnace reactors.
- Structural & Material Characterization: Perform structural validation with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and characterize products using techniques such as SEM, TEM, XRD, Raman, XPS, BET, Laser Diffraction, IAN, OAN, XRF, ICP-OES, CHNSO, and TGA.
- Standardization & Documentation: Maintain and develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for QC in production.
Production Quality Management (25%)
- Support global production sites with chemical validation and purchasing before production.
- Oversee QC during production runs, ensuring materials meet specifications before reactor operations. Conduct product characterization using UV-Vis spectroscopy and Karl Fischer Titration.
- Implement and manage in-line analysis methodologies for real-time quality control.
This role involves occasional travel to production sites—approximately six weeks per year, with potential for increased travel in subsequent years.
Why You'll Love It Here
Impact: Be part of producing hundreds of tons of sustainable CarbonX materials for global markets, transforming industries and reducing environmental impact.
Growth: As CarbonX scales, so can your career. You’ll have opportunities to develop new skills and advance within the company.
Team Culture: Join a collaborative, feedback-driven team where your insights and ideas are valued.
Innovation: Work on cutting-edge processes and technologies in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Benefits: competitive salary, commuting allowance, 25 days of annual paid leave.
Who You Are
We’re looking for someone who is precise, independent, and thrives in a lab environment. You must be decisive and able to take charge in production settings.
Must-Haves:
- Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: At least 4 years of hands-on experience in a wet chemistry lab, particularly in handling/preparing emulsions or oils and in carbon material characterization
Key Skills & Attributes:
- Hands-on experience with analytical techniques such as UV-Vis, rheology, SEM, N2 physisorption, Karl Fischer titration and standard wet chemistry laboratory techniques.
- Strong ability to work independently, with high levels of autonomy after the induction period.
- Ability to develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) for QC processes.
- Decisive and persuasive personality, able to confidently enforce QC standards at production sites.
- Strong documentation and reporting skills.
What Success Will Look Like
Short-Term (2-4 months)
- Become fully trained on QC analysis equipment and reactors in our Delft lab.
- Validate chemicals for upcoming production runs.
Mid-Term (4-12 months)
- Develop and implement QC methodologies for in-line monitoring.
- Oversee quality control during production runs, ensuring materials meet CarbonX’s specifications.
Long-Term (1-3 years)
- Contribute to the establishment of a global quality control framework for CarbonX production sites.
- Introduce and validate new analysis techniques to improve QC efficiency.
