MISSION TO METRICS

The Ocean Cleanup is a global nonprofit that develops and scales solutions to rid the world’s oceans of plastic, driving systemic change, and creating a lasting positive impact for people, wildlife, and the planet. Through our 30 Cities Program, we partner with local governments, organizations, and communities to scale the organization’s proven Interceptor™ solutions across 30 key cities in Asia and the Americas, aiming to eliminate up to one-third of all plastic flowing from the world’s rivers into the ocean before the end of the decade.

THE ASSIGNMENT

The Marketing Department transforms The Ocean Cleanup’s mission and story into investable products that attract funders and partners. By clearly articulating the organization’s outcomes and impact, the team ensures its value proposition remains relevant and compelling. The goal is to develop marketable assets and products that secure financial support and demonstrate measurable results. Within the marketing team, the Impact Innovation team is responsible for designing value propositions that contribute to resilient, long-term funding mechanisms, ensuring the sustainability of our mission.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The role of this position is to help create a positive feedback loop between external insights and our internal product development.

Day to day work consists of:

  • Building internal alignment and infrastructure to deliver new aspects of our value proposition.
  • Supporting the critical work of building long term fundraising and operational infrastructure that can sustain our organization 2-3 years down our scale up pathway.
  • Occasionally providing specialist support to the fundraising team (e.g. building bespoke strategic pitches to critical “customers”).

Although ultimately driving commercial outcomes, this role steps beyond traditional “sales”, and requires intensive collaboration with subject matter experts across The Ocean Cleanup’s business development, waste management, finance, and research teams.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Essential
  • Problem solver mindset. More important than technical expertise is the ability to think laterally, using a range of tools to overcome transdisciplinary challenges.
  • Excellent writer and narrative builder , able to synthesize lots of information and express it in an “executive” style, and adept at achieving simplicity on the other side of complexity.
  • Detail oriented, with a drive to catalogue, codify, and quantify.
Ideally also bringing
  • ~5 years experience in highly practical, trans-disciplinary work.
  • A mix of commercial and scientific/academic expertise ($X concrete deals closed. This candidate needs to understand the importance of expressing things in $ and time value).
  • An ability to embrace the daily grind and work to tight deadlines, while keeping an eye on the horizon (never losing the forest for the trees).
  • Willingness to travel, supporting us in keeping our ear to the ground with local stakeholders).
