Vacancy – Technical Owner Power & Digital

Company: SolarDuck
Location: Rotterdam, Netherlands

About Us:
SolarDuck is a Dutch-Norwegian cleantech company bringing to market world-class Offshore Floating Solar solutions. The company aims to pioneer sustainable offshore energy solutions and save 50 million tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2040, by implementing its energy
solutions on the planet’s oceans.

Join Us:
Are you a dynamic, impact-driven Offshore Power & Digital Systems Lead eager to explore new solutions and thrive in a fast-paced, innovative environment? Do you have the leadership and expertise to help scale our solutions to save 50 million tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2040? If so, we want to hear from you.

The Role:

As Technical Owner Power & Digital Systems, you are responsible for the Power & Digital Systems (P&D) scope of SolarDuck’s offshore floating platforms. In more common market terms, this role sits at the intersection of offshore power systems, microgrids, electrical distribution, power conversion, battery systems, control, monitoring, communications, cybersecurity and digital systems.

You will own the P&D discipline architecture and technical baseline. This includes P&D assumptions, sizing basis, interface content, verification approach, supplier evidence and technical acceptance of P&D deliverables.

This is not a narrow electrical calculation or supplier follow-up role. You will combine engineering judgement with technical ownership, internal coordination, external partner direction and review of specialist engineering work. You will work with internal Technical Owners, the Project Manager Engineering, the Procurement Lead, the CTO where required, internal engineers and external P&D specialists and partners, including suppliers, integrators, offshore engineering contractors and classification and certification bodies.

You act as the internal discipline owner and maintain design control over Power & Digital Systems. Your role is to make sure that P&D decisions are technically sound, supported by appropriate supplier evidence, clearly communicated and integrated into the wider system architecture.

Responsibilities:

  • Own the P&D discipline architecture and technical baseline for SolarDuck platform developments, including offshore power, microgrid, electrical, control, monitoring, communications, cybersecurity and digital systems.
  • Lead P&D feasibility and site assessment work, including electrical load assessments, irradiance, PV yield modelling, energy balance models, power system studies and verification methods.
  • Develop and maintain a standardized internal P&D design, sizing and verification framework, including methods, assumptions, templates and lessons learned.
  • Translate project, supplier and certification inputs into a clear P&D design basis, including requirements, interfaces, assumptions, risks and recommendations.
  • Maintain design control over P&D contributions across concept, basic and detailed design, including supplier selection support, certification, verification, commissioning readiness and service and maintenance readiness.
  • Define, review and approve the integrated P&D architecture and technical design basis across offshore power, control, monitoring, communications and cybersecurity systems.
  • Own the P&D energy management and control philosophy, including redundancy and fault recovery principles.
  • Define the P&D technical approach required to support system-level availability requirements defined and analyzed by Technical Owner Systems.
  • Define and approve P&D interface requirements, and represent the P&D discipline in cross-discipline alignment and design trade-offs.
  • Ensure that P&D systems, equipment and supplier packages are specified, integrated, verified and accepted against the required technical, safety-related, hazardous area, cybersecurity, classification and certification requirements.
  • Define and manage externally led P&D engineering scopes through technical direction, interface control, progress follow-up and technical acceptance or rejection of outputs.
  • Represent SolarDuck in technical discussions with clients and their electrical, control, communications and digital systems experts within the P&D scope.
  • Provide technical guidance, coaching, review and feedback to internal engineers working within the P&D scope.
  • Manage P&D technical risks, assumptions, design changes and open decisions, and escalate fundamental trade-offs or infeasible design outcomes with clear options, consequences and recommendations.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Marine Electrical Engineering, Offshore Energy Systems or a closely related discipline.
  • 5 or more years of relevant experience in electrical system design, offshore electrical systems, power systems, microgrids, renewable energy systems or integrated offshore energy systems.
  • Strong understanding of offshore power and microgrid architecture, including generation and storage integration, electrical distribution, protection, power conversion, energy management, redundancy and fault recovery principles.
  • Understanding of control, monitoring, communications, cybersecurity and digital system architecture, including client interface requirements.
  • Experience defining, reviewing or accepting integrated P&D architectures, technical specifications, equipment requirements, supplier outputs and verification evidence.
  • Experience defining or reviewing P&D assumptions, sizing and performance criteria, electrical load assessments, irradiance, PV yield modelling, energy balance models, power system studies, verification methods and interface requirements.
  • Experience translating classification and certification requirements into P&D specifications, verification requirements, supplier evidence requirements and technical acceptance criteria.
  • Experience coordinating externally led engineering scopes, including technical direction, interface control, progress follow-up, technical review and escalation of risks and open decisions.
  • The ability to challenge supplier, contractor and specialist engineering work and translate technical findings into clear risks, recommendations, decisions and design inputs.
  • The ability to provide technical guidance, coaching and mentoring to engineers working within the P&D scope.
  • The ability to contribute professionally to technical discussions with clients and their technical experts within the P&D scope.

Why SolarDuck?

  • The opportunity to work on sustainable offshore energy systems at an early and impactful stage, with engineering work that directly contributes to safe, reliable, and scalable offshore solutions.
  • Close collaboration with experienced internal engineers, Technical Owners and relevant external specialists.
  • Room to take ownership, challenge assumptions, shape internal methods and grow SolarDuck’s Power & Digital Systems capability.
  • A competitive salary package aligned with your experience, level and responsibilities.
  • Attractive and flexible employment conditions, including flexible working hours and a hybrid working arrangement.
  • Regular team moments, including Wednesday lunches, sustainability days, weekly stand-ups and a memorable Christmas party.

At SolarDuck, we value diversity and inclusivity, and we encourage all qualified candidates to apply.
