Instrumentation, Controls, and Systems Engineer

We are currently seeking an innovative Instrumentation, Controls, and Systems Engineer who loves to solve technical and non-technical problems, thrives on rapid change, and has a proven record of getting things done ridiculously fast.

The successful candidate will play a crucial role in delivering the design, implementation, and maintenance of control systems, instruments, and equipment used to operate and monitor our continuous demonstration plant efficiently and safely, which we plan to startup this year.

This role requires a deep understanding of engineering principles and industry standards to ensure systems are reliable, sustainable, and meet all regulatory requirements.

You will also play an essential role in developing our first-of-a-kind commercial-scale plant. This position requires a combination of technical and non-technical expertise, a very strong ability to listen to perspectives that are not your own, argue ideas clearly and constructively, instinctive attention to detail while being able to know when something is good enough, and, most importantly, the ability to thrive under constantly changing conditions.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

You have:

  • A degree in Engineering, preferably in Electrical engineering or Control Systems, or a related field. However, adjacent degrees such as physics, process, mechanical, or industrial engineering are also acceptable.
  • At least eight years of hands-on operational experience within a manufacturing/production facility. You should be familiar with safety principles in design and operations. You should have solid, practical experience demonstrating your ability to comfortably task-switch between operational, maintenance, and technical needs.
  • Expertise in control systems, instrumentation, sensors, PLCs, SCADA, and HMI (Human-Machine Interface) technologies. Knowledge of safety instrumented systems (SIS) and emergency shutdown systems (ESD). You deeply understand the selection, installation, calibration, and maintenance of sensors, transmitters, and actuaries. Prior experience in Project Management is a plus.
  • Familiarity with O-PAS architecture or deep interest in rapid learning of O-PAS Standards.
  • Understanding of predictive, preventive, and corrective maintenance practices for processing units, instrumentation, and control systems.
  • Can quickly make first-principle calculations to estimate the order of magnitudes and test dependencies /sensitivities.
  • You have expertise with software and tools for process simulation, CAD for designing schematics, and specialized software used in the petrochemical or mining industries. You also have an unusual passion for making Cause-and-Effect Diagrams and developing Control Narratives.
  • You have a positive, growth mindset. You are humble enough to recognize when you’re not succeeding and find ways to change your behavior.
  • You have an uncanny ability to quickly adapt to new situations, people, and ways of working. You don’t settle for being comfortable and seek accelerated growth. You have a fearless approach to learning new skills and are unafraid to fail.
  • You must have a strong ability to listen to perspectives other than your own and to argue ideas clearly, concisely, and constructively.
  • A strong ability to solve technical and non-technical problems and acrobat-like skills in effectively resolving conflicts with grace and a pinch of humor.
  • A healthy dose of impatience while being positive and collaborative, and the ability to make decisions and take action with limited information.

Role Overview:

In this role, you will be responsible for:

  • Design and Development: Together with the Automation Lead, deliver key project objectives in the successful design, development, construction, commissioning, and startup of all the control systems and instrumentation for the Demonstration plant by year-end. This includes selecting appropriate hardware and software, creating schematics, and ensuring integration with current and future systems. You will also ensure that key learnings from executing our automation roadmap are transferred to the feasibility study of our First-Of-A-Kind (FOAK) commercial plant.
  • Maintenance and Troubleshooting: Perform routine maintenance on control systems and instrumentation. Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to sensors, actuators, PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems.
  • Project Management: Manage projects from conception to completion, including planning, budgeting, scheduling, and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Compliance and Safety: Ensure all control systems and instruments comply with industry standards and safety regulations. Conduct risk assessments and safety audits and implement corrective actions as necessary.
  • Continuous Improvement: Monitor the performance of control systems and recommend improvements or upgrades to enhance efficiency, reliability, and safety.
  • Technical Support: You will work with a team of operators, engineers, and other specialists to troubleshoot the process and operational issues.
  • Identify creative, breakthrough opportunities to reduce costs and improve our CO2 footprint.
