Automation Leader

This is an opportunity to work in a high-paced, pioneering company, shaping the CO2 removal and CO2 negative materials industries.

OVERVIEW

Paebbl is looking to add an outstanding Automation Lead to the team. This will be a core role on the Engineering team, working closely with the VP of Engineering on a variety of key projects with the goal of enabling the team to go as fast as possible in its R&D and pilot plant construction and operation and ultimately for the full automation of future projects.

This role will be up to the successful candidate to shape as we grow and develop as an organization, with significant development opportunities.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

  • Develop and manage all Project deliverables related to automation for the build-up of our first pilot plant in our Rotterdam R&D campus. You will be responsible for the delivery of all Instrumentation, Controls, Systems and Applications associated tasks to make sure the pilot plant project is delivered on time and within budget

  • Consult with relevant stakeholders to balance between technical design solutions with commercial and operational feasibility and risk

  • Implement and review standard and non-standard automation and control system design, operation, testing and commissioning

  • Selection of industrial process automation systems, such as Honeywell, Emerson, Siemens, Rockwell, ABB or others, as well as safeguarding systems like triconex, HIMA as needed. Experience with other control systems (e.g. TDC3000, Experion, SMS, RTU2020 or HC900) are a bonus

  • Proactive and effective communication with other engineering disciplines, project management and client teams

  • Work closely with Operations, Maintenance and project teams to develop a roadmap for a fully automated plant from basic controls, advanced controls to machine learning.

  • Foster technical innovation, acquisition of expertise and support a continuous improvement culture and the development of best practices

  • Review and check network security obligations related to compliance with legislative requirements and regulations

  • Provide support, or lead if necessary all procurement activities related to automation.

  • Contribute to the development and growth of people (e.g. coaching junior engineers).

  • Potentially grow into managing larger teams as more people with specialist and junior expertise are added to the team

    YOUR PROFILE

You are an experienced Instrumentation Controls and Systems engineer, who loves working with diverse teams and getting things done. You have at least 10 years experience in project engineering (Conceptual, basic design, FEED and Detail Engineering) and have previous experience in leading I&CS teams. At least 5 years of experience in manufacturing and operations in this field is also strongly desired.

You have proven leadership experience in mining or petrochemical markets. Experience in upstream oil and gas, minerals recovery, steel and cement industries are also highly beneficial.

You have a strong affinity for commercial matters and possess business acumen, able to work under significant time pressure. You are able to lead and motivate teams, can maintain a good sense of humor, particularly in business environments characterized by change and uncertainty. You are able to organize and set priorities, communicate and present effectively and demonstrate initiative and a proactive attitude. You thrive in high-paced environments where you can contribute with your skills and collaborative attitude, to bring physical projects across the line.

You will be expected to lead the development of automation systems, including control applications for operational and safe-guarding as well as lead the exploration of bringing artificial intelligence / machine-learning technology to future plants and as such, you should have advanced knowledge of substation SCADA/control and automation systems obtained through experience, networking, research and other means of professional development.

You will be involved in building up Paebbl’s first pilot plant, in many ways our most important project for the next 12-24 months in addition to the next scale-up plant that could be 100x as large. As such, you will be confronted with a diverse range of operational and R&D challenges, incorporating new data from operational and pilot plant data into the next demonstration plant, so you need to be structured, resourceful and adaptable.

From small to big projects, you have a long list of successfully run projects to your name, in which you have demonstrated the ability to adapt, think analytically and creatively about problem solving. You enjoy collaborating across disciplines, as well as a constructive approach to teamwork. You have good communication skills and are fluent in English (fluency in Dutch is a plus!).
