What will you be doing?

The Health and Safety Officer is responsible for implementing health and safety policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and promote a safe working environment. You assess risks, develop strategies to mitigate hazards, and provide training to employees to raise awareness about safety protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Implementing and maintaining Safety Policies: Implement, and update health and safety policies and procedures in accordance with local, state, and international regulations. Ensure policies are effectively communicated and followed throughout the organization.

  • Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification: Conduct regular workplace inspections to identify potential hazards and assess risks. Analyze accident and incident reports to determine trends and areas for improvement. Develop strategies to mitigate risks and prevent accidents.

  • Help carry out and formalize (either independently or with others) the mandatory risk inventory and evaluation (RI&E).

  • Organize the safety committee meetings, activities and follow up.

  • Training and Education: Organize and conduct safety training programs for employees, including new hire orientation and ongoing training sessions. Educate staff on safe work practices, emergency procedures, and the proper use of safety equipment.

  • Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and regulations. Keep track of changes in regulations and industry standards, and update policies and procedures accordingly. Liaise with regulatory agencies and participate in inspections and audits as required.

  • Accident Investigation: Investigate workplace accidents, near misses, and incidents to determine root causes and prevent recurrence. Compile and analyze data to identify trends and develop corrective actions. Prepare reports for management and regulatory agencies as necessary.

  • Safety Promotion: Promote a culture of safety throughout the organization. Encourage employee involvement in safety initiatives and recognize contributions to maintaining a safe work environment. Implement incentives and recognition programs to motivate adherence to safety protocols.

  • Emergency Preparedness: Develop and maintain emergency response plans for various scenarios, including fires, chemical spills, and medical emergencies. Conduct drills and simulations to test emergency procedures and ensure staff readiness.

  • Safety Equipment and Facilities: Ensure the availability and proper maintenance of safety equipment and facilities, such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency exits. Coordinate with relevant departments to address maintenance issues promptly.

  • Documentation and Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, training sessions, incident reports, and other relevant documents.
