We are Last Mile Solutions

With over 360,000 charging stations and 1.9 million charging cards across 22 countries, Last Mile Solutions is Europe's largest independent e-mobility platform. The scale behind these numbers results in massive real-time data flows and high-volume transaction processing.

Our mission is simplifying the energy transition and creating a sustainable world by turning energy into value.

We're currently searching for a Medior/Senior Backend Software Engineer to join our team in Rotterdam.

Our core values:

  • Empowering connections - We believe great things happen when people, systems, and energy are connected. We build with that in mind, for our customers, our colleagues, and our platform.

  • Exploring with purpose - Curious by nature, but moving with intent. Experiment, learn and iterate. In service of a clear goal.

  • Owning our impact - We take responsibility for what we build and how it affects the world around us. From code quality to the energy transition.

Your role

As a Backend Software Engineer at Last Mile Solutions, you are a hands-on engineer who takes real ownership of the products your team builds. You work in a compact, fast-growing PHP-focussed engineering team, as PHP is currently our primary backend language. One of our engineering teams works with Go, but this role will primarily involve working with PHP.
At Last Mile Solutions you will be developing software for the next generation of e-mobility solutions — not just building features, but contributing to a growing platform with all the challenges that come with it.
You don’t just write code, you understand the bigger picture. You grasp the connections between systems and the products you are building and you use that understanding to make better engineering decisions. You bring a product mindset to your technical work.

You work closely with your Tech Lead, Product Manager and fellow engineers to design, implement, and operate scalable and reliable backend systems.
You're eager to grow your impact over time.

Your main responsibilities

  • Work on the full lifecycle of your team's products: understanding the underlying problem, designing pragmatic solutions, and implementing, testing, and releasing features.

  • Understand the product you are building, not just the code, but the business context, user needs and how your work connects to the broader platform.

  • Write high-quality code and ensure quality through thorough testing — including edge cases, performance, and reliability.

  • Monitor and operate systems in production, using observability tooling to spot issues and continuously improve reliability.

  • Work according to DevSecOps principles: integrating security thinking into your daily engineering work, from design to deployment.

  • Collaborate with Platform Engineering to adopt shared systems, improve CI/CD pipelines, and enhance developer experience.

  • Work across teams to improve and scale the platform as a whole.

  • Embrace and actively adopt AI tooling and practices in your daily workflow.

  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement — in code, in process, and in craft.

  • Depending on the team, the role may involve working in 24/7 shifts or participating in an on-call rotation.

You recognise yourself in

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science (or equivalent through experience).

  • At least 4 years of work experience as a Backend Software Engineer in an agile, preferably product-led organisation.

  • You think in distributed systems. You've designed or maintained asynchronous, event-driven architectures and know how to handle high-throughput, high-load scenarios with confidence. Working with RabbitMQ and or SQS in the cloud feels natural to you, and you understand the trade-offs between different messaging and queuing patterns.

  • You're comfortable working across languages. PHP is our primary backend language at the moment.

  • Experience with Go is a plus.

  • You know your way around relational databases and NoSQL stores like Redis or DynamoDB. You pick the right tool for the job.

  • Containers are part of your daily workflow — Docker is a must. Experience with CI/CD pipelines and broader DevOps practices is a genuine plus.

  • You have a natural curiosity about the product you’re building. You connect the dots between systems, think beyond your own ticket, and are eager to understand why things are built the way they are.

  • You embrace DevSecOps as a mindset: you take ownership of security in your own code and see secure development practices as part of good engineering .

  • You're not daunted by legacy code or monoliths — you've refactored and improved long-lived systems and see it as an opportunity.

  • You are keen to iterate, improve, and find and resolve performance gaps. You thrive in a fast-paced, fast-growing environment.

  • You are proactive, a quick learner, and continuously push yourself to improve.

  • You have an excellent command of the English language and you recognise yourself in our core values.

What we offer

  • A great challenge in the dynamic and sustainable sector of E-Mobility

  • Ambitious colleagues as sparring partners

  • Training and development opportunities in an international environment

  • 25 vacation days and 13 ATV days (38 days total based on full-time)

  • Full reimbursement of public transport costs or a mileage allowance and a parking pass

  • A cosy office at a top location in Rotterdam
