Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Delft, The Netherlands
32–38 hours per week
MSc level or equivalent experience
5+ years relevant experience

About the role

IMSystems is growing from a technology‑driven start-up into a product company. To support this next phase, we are looking for a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer who not only excels at mechanical design, but also helps structure and mature our engineering and product development processes.

This is a hands‑on role in a fast‑moving start-up environment. You will actively design hardware while also bringing experience from more structured engineering organizations — helping us improve how we develop products, document designs, manage interfaces, and move from concept to production.

What you will do

Product & Mechanical Design

  • Lead the mechanical design of next‑generation Archimedes Drive products, from early concept through detailed design and industrialization.

  • Translate product and customer requirements into robust, manufacturable mechanical solutions.

  • Perform tolerance stack‑ups, basic FEA, and design validation to support design decisions.

  • Create high‑quality production drawings, assembly documentation, and engineering deliverables with minimal ambiguity.

  • Support prototype build, testing, and iteration in close collaboration with test and assembly engineers.

Product Development & Engineering Process

  • Help structure and improve the engineering workflow, including:

    • Design reviews and gated development phases

    • Interface definition and documentation

    • Change management and version control

    • Design for manufacturability and scalability

  • Bring best practices from more mature organizations and adapt them pragmatically to a start-up environment.

  • Support the transition from development projects to repeatable product platforms.

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Work closely with R&D, testing, and production to ensure design intent is carried through.

  • Act as a senior technical reference within the engineering team.

  • Coach and support junior engineers.

  • Contribute to shaping how the engineering team will grow in the future.

What we are looking for

You don’t need a PhD — we are designing and building products, not doing academic research.

Required

  • MSc level of thinking, through education or equivalent practical experience.

  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical design and product development.

  • Strong experience in designing industrial or high‑precision mechanical systems.

  • Solid understanding of manufacturability, tolerances, and production methods (steel and precision components).

  • Experience working in structured engineering environments (clear processes, reviews, documentation).

  • Hands‑on, solution‑oriented, and comfortable working under pressure.

  • Able to work independently while collaborating closely with others.

  • Fluent in English

Nice to have

  • Experience bringing products from prototype to production.

  • Exposure to start-up or scale‑up environments.

  • Experience mentoring engineers or leading small technical teams.

  • Interest in growing into a technical leadership role.

Who you are

  • You enjoy solving real engineering problems, not just designing on paper.

  • You are resilient and comfortable with ambiguity, priorities can shift, and prototypes don’t always work the first time.

  • You combine pragmatism with high standards.

  • You get energy from building things and improving how things are built.

What we offer

  • A senior, impactful role in a growing deep‑tech start-up.

  • Competitive salary.

  • Share participation, everyone shares in IMSystems’ success.

  • A high degree of ownership and autonomy.

  • Direct impact on how products, and engineering processes, are built.

  • Strong support for professional growth and future leadership development.

  • A motivated, collaborative team working on breakthrough mechatronics technology.

IMSystems is an equal opportunity employer.
