Job description

Software Engineer

At Freeday, we build digital employees that automate repetitive work so people can focus on what really matters. Our AI platform helps companies streamline processes, connect systems and bring intelligent automation to life.

Now we’re looking for a Software Engineer who wants to build the product behind those digital employees. Someone who enjoys solving real client problems, understands the product behind the code and knows how to turn messy ideas into clear, shippable work.

What you’ll do

As a Software Engineer, you’ll join our Digital Employee Management Platform squad. This is the part of Freeday that helps clients configure, coach and manage their digital employees. Think skills, flows, integrations, coaching loops, admin tooling and the portal experience around it. You bring product sense, client empathy and engineering ownership. You understand what clients are trying to achieve, translate that into practical technical solutions and help decide what we should build, configure or leave for later.

This is not a role where tickets are handed to you fully written out. You’ll be involved earlier in the process. You’ll ask questions, shape ideas, write things down clearly and then help ship the solution.

Your days might look like this:

  • Turning client and implementation team input into scoped engineering work

  • Building backend features, integrations and platform improvements

  • Working mainly with Python and Django, while touching other parts of the stack when needed

  • Writing clear technical designs, ADRs or product notes that others can understand

  • Joining discussions with product, design, implementation and engineering

  • Building integrations with systems like Salesforce, Microsoft Graph, Apaleo or Zendesk

  • Helping ship client-specific projects without turning everything into custom work

  • Keeping the product practical, scalable and useful in the real world

Why Freeday

We are a Rotterdam based tech scale-up with big ambitions and a team that loves building things that matter. We prefer working together at the office because the best ideas often start at the coffee machine or in front of a whiteboard.

You’ll join a curious group of people who like solving real problems and learning every day how to get better at it. No big egos. No corporate nonsense. Just people who want to build meaningful products together.

What you’ll get from us

  • A role with real influence where you can see the direct impact of your work

  • A team full of smart and driven people

  • A solid salary, pension plan, laptop and travel allowance

  • An office five minutes from Rotterdam Central

  • Space to grow, experiment and make mistakes because that is how you learn

  • Regular drinks, fun team moments and plenty of laughs along the way

Job requirements

Who you are

You are a software engineer who cares about more than just the code. You want to understand why something is being built, who it helps and whether it actually solves the problem.

You like working on product questions, but you still enjoy engineering. You can take a vague problem, ask the right questions and turn it into something clear enough to build. You are pragmatic by default. You do not overcomplicate things when a simple solution gets us moving.

You probably recognize yourself in this:

  • You have around 3 to 5 years of professional engineering experience

  • You are strong in backend development, ideally with Python

  • Experience with Django or Django REST Framework is useful, but not a must

  • You have worked on product features, not only technical tickets

  • You can explain previous work in terms of the problem, the user and the trade-offs

  • You write clearly and can document technical choices in a way others understand

  • You are comfortable working with ambiguity

  • You like talking to people outside engineering to understand what is really needed

  • Comfortable using tools like Cursor, Claude Code or similar agentic coding tools

  • You speak English fluently

  • You are based in the Netherlands and can work from our office regularly

Nice to have

  • Experience with AI, LLMs, agents, prompts or evals

  • Experience with GCP, Postgres, Grafana or basic ops

  • Experience in a SaaS or scale-up environment

  • Experience with conversational AI, chatbots or voice agents

  • Dutch communication skills are a plus, but not required

  • This role is probably not for you if

  • You prefer to only work on deep backend, platform or infra problems

  • You need fully written Jira tickets before you can get started

  • You want to specialize deeply in one technical layer

  • You prefer research over shipping real product improvements
