Job description

Are you a starting engineer who wants your code running a real company's data within your first month?

Crunch builds the data-driven companies of tomorrow. That takes solid data engineering, and solid data engineers have to start somewhere. We'd rather that somewhere be here: on real client platforms, next to people who've built dozens of them, instead of in a sandbox or a training carousel.

That means we hire you for your potential, then invest heavily to turn it into craft.

As a Junior Data Engineer, you learn the trade the way it should be learned: by building. You start paired with a medior or senior engineer on a live project, writing pipelines that get reviewed by people who care about the difference between working and good. Over your first year, you grow from following the pattern to understanding why the pattern exists, and from picking up tickets to owning your own pipelines. Our stack is Azure, Databricks, and dbt, and your first Databricks certification is part of the plan, on our time and our dime.

In your role, curiosity counts for more than credentials. We can teach you the tools. We can't teach you to want to know how things work.

What will be part of your responsibilities?

  • Build and test ELT pipelines with dbt, SQL, and Python, with code review that actually teaches you something;

  • Connect source systems (ERPs, planning tools, e-commerce platforms) under guidance, then increasingly on your own;

  • Learn data modeling by doing, on data models that real planners and managers depend on;

  • Pick up the operational side of the craft: monitoring, debugging, keeping platforms healthy;

  • Join client meetings early. We'd rather you learn to talk to a business owner in year one than in year five;

  • Work toward your first Databricks certification, with study time and support built in.

Our offer

First off, you will become part of a steadily growing team of people keen on applying the latest technologies and techniques in the fields of data science, machine learning & AI. You will work in a vibrant, innovation-loving environment with the proper dash of geekiness and love for board games.

While you will be able to work both at the office (in Gent or in Rotterdam) or at home, your presence might also be required on-site with clients. Our offices in Ghent and Rotterdam are easy to reach, located in a colorful neighborhood of each city center, close to a vast array of after-work shenanigans.

We provide an attractive salary package stuffed with additional benefits such as an (optional) company car & fuel card, smartphone, and other gear. We help you to get around either by car, train, and/or e-bike. It's yours to choose.

We put a lot of time and effort into your personal growth and development, both as a technician and business professional. We provide dedicated feedback and coaching sessions to help you walk the career path you envisage. Expect your own talent development roadmap and the opportunity to showcase your knowledge to a broader engineering community.

On top of that, we do team trips, planned events, ad-hoc events, anything really to ensure you shine within a thriving team.

Up for the challenge?

Apply now and we'll review your application, and may invite you for an initial phone interview. A job-specific challenge and presentation later, you could be the next engineer we help grow from promising to indispensable!

Job requirements

Required Skills

  • A degree in a technical or quantitative field, or the self-taught equivalent you can demonstrate;

  • Working knowledge of SQL and Python: not mastery, but proof you've built things with them;

  • Genuine curiosity about how data flows through a company;

  • The honesty to say "I don't know," followed immediately by the drive to find out;

  • You are fluent in English.

Preferred Skills

  • A side project, thesis, or internship involving data pipelines, databases, or cloud platforms;

  • A first taste of dbt, Databricks, Azure, or similar tools;

  • Speaking Dutch is a definite plus. French is also nice to have.

Above all, you should be the kind of person who, when something finally works, immediately wants to know why.
