About the role
We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer to design, develop, and optimize robotic systems equipped with laser technology for bird deterrence purposes. Your daily job involves a mix of designing new products and accessories and upgrading our current products in the field. You will work on the mechanical and mechatronic aspects of our products, ensuring seamless integration of mechanics and electronics. This role requires creativity and a passion for solving engineering challenges. You will work in a small development team that works on both new, longer-term product development projects as well as one-off design requests and upgrades to our current products, which requires you to be flexible and deal with shifting priorities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop mechanical components for our products and accessories, and hand them over to the right supplier for production.
- Integrate mechatronic systems, including sensors and actuators, to ensure precise and reliable operation of our products.
- Design and build custom, one-off mechatronic solutions for unique customer applications. For example, make 3D printed or machined parts come together with sheet metal parts, cable harnesses, and custom cables to build a one-off accessory for a customer.
- Connect with external partners and suppliers to use their expertise in your projects, for example, for design reviews, compliance testing, and prototype manufacturing.
- Collaborate with your embedded software and full-stack colleagues to create fully functional automated laser bird dispersal products.
- Document your finalized designs into technical drawings and Bill of Materials. You own the Technical Product Documentation of our products.
- Validate functionality of prototypes with a wide range of test tooling, such as lab bench power supplies, oscilloscopes, laser power meters, etc.
- Design and build custom test tools in collaboration with our assembly partner.
- Apply your knowledge and expertise to support your Tech Service colleagues or parts suppliers when issues arise with the current products in the field or during assembly.
- Conduct (field) tests to evaluate the effectiveness of robotic units in real-world environments.
- Ensure compliance by incorporating safety and industry regulations into the product design.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics
- 5+ years of experience in mechanical design, robotics, or mechatronics
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Fusion360, or Inventor) for designing mechanical components.
- Strong knowledge of robotics, actuators, and sensors.
- Familiarity with prototyping, 3D printing, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience in designing parts that are produced using a variety of production techniques, such as injection molding, die casting, sheet metal, etc.
- Experience with prototyping, for example, using a 3D printer
Skills & competencies
- Problem-solving mindset with strong hands-on skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Familiarity with Altium and/or electronics design is considered a plus
- Familiarity with production environments is considered a plus (DFM)
- Already based in the Netherlands and holding a valid work permit
